A very small, very electric car.
The 2018 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. It parks where nothing else fits, turns around in a driveway, and costs a few dollars a week to run.

This car is for you if…
It is not a car for everyone. It is a wonderful car for some people.
- You can never find a parking space in Boston.
- You'd like to be able to make a U-turn in your own driveway.
- You want a cute little car for local driving.
- You'd like to do something about climate change.
- You're tired of spending $75 to fill the tank on your SUV.
- You wouldn't mind the $3,500 Massachusetts rebate for used EVs.
Of course, it isn't perfect
The maximum comfortable range is about 60 miles. My own commute was 30 miles each way, which it handled every day — but this is a car for around town, not for road trips.
Smaller than you think. Safer than you think.
The usual worry about a car this size is safety. The numbers are reassuring.
Roomier inside than out
MotorTrend's six-foot-six driver fit comfortably. The cabin is genuinely generous — the car gives up its length, not your legroom.
Seven airbags, steel cage
A rigid steel safety cell surrounds the passenger compartment. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the Fortwo Good, its best category, for front and side impact.
88 / 100
Real Safe Cars' overall safety score. And when you're driving something this small, you pay attention to traffic — which may be part of the reason.
Colors reflect vehicle safety, from red (less safe) to green (safer). A score of 0 implies a 0.15% chance of driver death over 15 years; a score of 100 implies 0.016%. The Smart Fortwo's 88 works out to about a 0.031% chance of driver death, and a 2.8% chance of injury.
